Job searching and interviewing for a job when you are employed can be tricky, especially if you don’t want your employer to know that you are considering quitting.
Giving an excuse for taking leave
If you decide you don’t want to risk being candid, you can say you have an “appointment” or that you have something personal that you need to take care of. Your employer will have no grounds to intrude into your personal space.
When to schedule it
Schedule your interviews early or late in the day – it’s less noticeable and less disruptive to arrive late or leave early than to mysteriously disappear, only to reappear in the middle of the day. You can consider a lunch hour interview, but the time limits may be nerve-wrecking. A half day off will allow you ample time for your interview.
Never, never
Use your company computer to map your moves – this includes communicating with your future employer, or anyone else you might consult about your next move. Get a private email account (preferably one with minimal advertising). Use your personal hand phone to talk to potential employers. Keep your plans confidential, especially from your colleagues – no matter how much you trust them. Definitely don’t write your resume at work, even during your lunch hour.
