6 ombre locks we're lusting over now

With the Lunar New Year just round the corner, it's perhaps time to head to the salon for a new look (it usually takes two to three weeks for you to get used to a new hairstyle!). If you're sick of your usual dye job, why not try out some ombre hair dyes which are still very much in trend. Here are six ombre locks that we're lusting over right now:

Which is your favourite among the six?

Beauty reboot 2014

I am not so big on New Year resolutions because who seriously can keep them (not me for one)? But the New Year is definitely the best time to make an excuse for a change, switch or spring clean.

While CNY is just round the corner, I suggest start by cleaning out your makeup bags and bathroom beauty junks and gunks. I believe that a lot of us are guilty of excess. So where do you begin?

Firstly, if any of your makeup compacts, pencils, mascaras, lipsticks or eyeshadows look like they are near the end of their life span, please toss them. They should not even last past one year if they’ve been used regularly. Take this as an opportunity to shop for more exciting new colours!

With skincare, only you will know what works best for your skin. If there’s anything in the bathroom that haven’t been used since its opening, it’ll be wise to either toss them if they have been sitting there for too long or pass it on to a sister or friend (who does not have sensitive skin) if they haven’t been opened that long ago. Do ask them to do a patch test before applying it directly on the face. You may also want to reexamine your skincare routine. Is your skin still behaving the same way? Know that as you grow a year older, your skin also goes through change – your hormones can cause them to over-react. This means that you’ll have to switch your skincare products to suit an oilier or drier skin condition. But then again, there are some lucky ones who may get away with the rest of their adult years seeing little or no change even. I say, stick to what works best for your skin.

Meanwhile, please check out our New Year, New Beauty Routine! feature on page 132 in the January issue of CLEO to find out further how stay on top by making the right beauty decisions.

Happy spring cleaning!

EE Cream: The latest double-letter beauty invention

You’ve probably heard of the BB (blemish balm), CC (colour corrector), and DD (dynamic do-all or dynamic defense) cream (we talked about them here), but it doesn’t end there – EE (extra exfoliating) cream is the latest double-letter beauty invention.

While the BB, CC and DD creams focus more on dolling you up, the EE cream is more of a skincare. The EE MarineGranules from Previse Skincare is a mousse that both buffs and soothes at the same time – perfect for our post-party skincare regime.

Although the EE cream is still not available in the market yet, we’re already wondering what will the next double-letter beauty invention would be. A FF (fast firming) cream, or perhaps a GG cream which stands for “get glowing”?

6 music festival makeup looks we love

Adding a little sparkle to your usual makeup look makes a whole lot of difference. With St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival coming right up (and the Lunar New Year just round the corner), it’s perhaps time to spice up your neutral makeup tones. Here are 6 music festival makeup looks we are loving at the moment.

Florence Welch and Aluna George's shimmery eyeshadows in white and gold respectively, draws all attention to their beautiful peepers!

COLLECTION's Work The Colour Trio Eyeshadow in 5 Champagne Fizz is perfect to add some gold shimmers to your eye. If you're feeling a tad more adventurous, try the Glam Crystals Gel Liner. Layer them over your regular black eyeliners for some sparkle and shine.

If you wanna keep your eyes neutral, play up your lips like Katy Perry and Anna Sophia Robb.

Make your lips look glossy and oh-so-kissable by adding a nude shimmery lipgloss in the middle of your lower lips.

Highlight your most prominent features with some shimmery shades like what Beyonce and Ellie Goulding did.

Contour, sculpt and highlight your face with just one product - COLLECTIONS Shimmer Shades in 1 Way to Glow. Simple yet instantly refreshes your entire look.

Create any one of the three looks featured in our CLEO's Guide to Cool Britannia booklet (which came with our January issue) with any COLLECTION products and you could be one of the five to win a makeover and photoshoot sponsored by COLLECTION. CLEO talks to Benefit's Global Beauty Authority Annie Ford Danielson

Annie Ford Danielson, beauty brand Benefit's Global Beauty Authority, shared her best beauty tip and her must-have products for the New Year in our January issue (pg 54). She now talks more about herself, her New Year resolution and gives more tips to nailing the right (classic) beauty look.

Q: What is your New Year resolution?

A: Firstly, I want to carve out more time for myself – to work out and do things to keep the energy up. For the brand, I want to find a way into a charitable cause. As we’ve been so fortunate, I’m trying to figure out a way to give back.

Q: If you’re not in Benefit, what would you be doing?

A: An interior designer or event planner. I love organising things and I’m already helping all my friends plan their weddings, and I’m also helping to design my sister’s new apartment and baby shower.

Q: Is the classic look of black eyeliner and red lips over-rated or still hot?

A: There’s always a right time and place for it – if you do it with the right outfit and at the right occasion, it’s really beautiful. It’s not a look that you want to wear everyday.

Ladies in Red

Call me a party pooper, but I’ve never been into the whole “wear red on Chinese New Year” idea. It doesn’t do anything for my skin tone, and I find it a bit too garish and dare I say it, attention-seeking. However, after tuning in to this year’s Golden Globes, I may be tempted to eat my words. Usually wearing red dresses on a red carpet is a no-no, but I’ll make an exception for these celebs.

Lupita Nyong’o
After seeing her in 12 Years A Slave, it’s a breath of fresh air to see Lupita all glammed up. Showing some skin in the neckline keeps her looking too covered up (or looking like an ang bao), plus she looks so cosy in that cape.

Emma Watson
Okay, so most people will either love or hate this look, but to me there’s nothing sexier than a backless dress. And coming from someone who hates being uncomfortable in formal dresses, I think the trousers are genius.

Amy Adams
At the risk of sounding creepy, after watching American Hustle I suddenly became acutely aware of Amy Adams’ ridiculously hot bod. But despite the plunging neckline, she manages to ooze class instead of looking vampy.

Be a tea connoisseur: 5 steps to faking it

Someone wise once said, “Tea is a hug in a cup.”

He might have been referring to TWG Tea. Comfort is an absolute necessity when seeking out the quintessential remedy for a broken heart or weary soul. You wouldn’t want to pick a flavour that doesn’t quite match your needs or preferences and end up ruining an otherwise calming experience.

The TWG Tea mobile app, which is available on the App store for iPhone and Android users, is a handy dandy mobile commerce app that will be your reliable BFF in future tea purchases.

Alternatively, it acts as an idiot-proof guide to becoming an overnight tea connoisseur. Here’s how to ensure no one sees through your bluff:

1. Pick your poison carefully.

Tea variety, flavour, country of origin, occasion, time of the day – there are simply too many (!!) factors to consider when picking a tea. It can get a little overwhelming. Take a deep breath, filter your search results and watch hundreds get whittled down to a couple.

2. Learn how to make tea properly.

Because tea is one of the most common drinks in the world, we assume we know how to make it. Thankfully, here to save our smart asses are simple steps, which come with each flavour, on proper ways to preserve its essence.

3. Find a gift according to categories.

Pick from the non-exhaustive list (‘For Him’, ‘For Her’, ‘For the Fashionista’, ‘For the Home’, and more) to show you put some thought into gifting. Even if all you did was click a few buttons on the app. Because hey, who wants to get a similar gift for their boss and mother?

4. Pick a gorgeous design.

Too many people underestimate the importance of visual appeal in building a brand. Each TWG packaging is a work of art in itself, so that even if your friends harbour doubts about your sudden impeccable taste in tea, at least they’ll believe your aesthetic sense.

5. It’s not just about the tea.

Macarons, chocolate, jelly… Undeniably the modern day hipster food, these sweet treats are all infused with a particular tea flavour. Bonus points for being the prettiest Instagram props.

Next time you find yourself with the urgent desire to impress your friends with your cultured knowledge of tea, whip out the app and remember: You’ve got this.

3 ways to rock a red eyeliner

Been wanting get out of a makeup rut? Lining your eyes with a bold-coloured eyeliner (instead of your usual black ones) is a simple yet effective way to change your look. While red may not be many beauty novices first choice when it comes to choosing a new eyeliner colour, it's actually a great colour to experiment (perhaps for the upcoming CNY or Valentines' Day celebrations?). Here's 3 ways that you can easily rock a red eyeliner.

1. Line the lower lash line for a pop of color

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

To prevent looking like someone who got punched in the eye, keep your eyelid fairly matte and nude. Line the upper lash line with a black liquid eyeliner. Line the lower lash line with this red gel liner, and apply a brown eyeliner on the waterline. Dark eye circles are a no-no, so conceal them so you don't look like a zombie, got punched or just cried through the night. Keep the rest of your face neutral and light with a some bronzer and lightly-tinted pink lips.

2. Create a double winged line on the upper lash line

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

With the first look, create a slightly edgier look by topping that red liner on the lower lash line with a black brown shadow with a smudge brush. Next, add that red gel liner on top of the black liquid liner you placed on the upper lash line and extend the line a bit so that it peeks out from the corners of your eye creating a slightly double wing effect.

3. Use the red gel liner as a base for red-tinge shadows

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

For a more glammed-up look, add a little bit more red eyeliner on the lids and lightly blend the edges out with your finger. Apply a metallic rose shadow on the inner half of the lid. With a burgundy shadow, apply it on the outer V of the lid and make sure that the edges are nicely blended out. Pat a little black eye shadow near your upper lash line for a bit of a smokey look. Using a black liquid liner, define those eyes again.

Which one of these looks do you like best?

Al & Alicia's film-inspired collection has perfect first-date looks

I took Apparel Design when I was in polytechnic and you know how lecturers will always be like: “Ok kids, come up with a theme for your collection by the end of today!” Im telling you, it’s Panic. Mode. On. then. Hence our safest bet? Inspiration from our current favourite movies, documentaries or old films.

And for those of you who have watched one of Wes Anderson’s famous films, MoonriseKingdom (it’s one of my favourite films!), you’ll definitely know where AL & ALICIA’s latest collection got their inspiration from. The movie is set in the 1960s (aka the era of English model, Twiggy) and is about a pair of young pen pals who met in summer, fell in love, made a pact to reunite and then run away together to venture on a spiritual journey that is not only romantic but funny and sartorially significant as well.

And so I think you’ve pretty much guessed it – the movie’s pop culture retrospective of the mid 60s trend is one of the essential themes of the SS14 collection, Runaway With Me. The colors are vibrant and bold, with khakis portraying the military field of rust and a palette of stripes and florals, peaches and yellows to symbolize innocence. Playing on proportions and bringing out the masculine chic in every girl perfectly.

To summarize, it is a touch of modern sportswear; with trousers, pantsuits, two-tone suits and shift dresses with Peter Pan inspired cut-outs and Boy Scout influenced silhouettes. Check out some of the pieces here!

“There’s a scene where the two misunderstood romantics are on a misty beach with an olive coloured lantern on the left, vintage suitcase on the right, her saddle oxfords on the left and a blue record player with a pair of binoculars in the foreground. It’s deeply charming, delicate, mischievous and slightly eccentric. And that’s exactly what inspired us while designing this collection” –Al & Alicia

Take time to watch this movie if you haven’t, but in the meanwhile, here’s a bonus -- an exclusive summer soundtrack by Cherry Chan from Syndicate. She compiled this exclusive mix inspired by the film. Enjoy! Visit www.alandalicia.com to download the mix.

5 vegetable juices that are great for cleansing

Feeling the guilt after feasting during the Lunar New Year holidays? It's perhaps time to cleanse and reboot your body system with a juice cleanse. Hic Juice and Sana Cleanse (the CLEO team tried them both! Check out our reviews on page 137 in our February issue!) are two companies (located in Singapore) that offer juice cleansing packages, but if you're looking to DIY your juices, here are 5 vegetable juices to introduce you to the world of detoxification.

Spinach contains various vitamins and calcium, iron and folic acid which are good for people both young and old. Also, it has vitamin C which is known for its anti-aging effects. If you can't get used to the taste of raw greens, mixing it with soy milk and sesame seeds are also healthy choices.

Cabbage juice has vitamin A, C, calcium, iron, mineral fibers and amino acids. It also has plentiful of vitamin K and U which strengthens the stomach and intestine ulcers. It is great for cleansing but it is best to eat as uncooked because heat can destroy the vitamins in cabbages far more easily than other vegetables. Cabbage juice has strong flavor so it is better to drink with carrot, celery or even with parsley. Also, mixing with oranges and green grapes changes its flavor and adds freshness.

 Image may be NSFW.

Cucumber contains Ascorbic Acid which dissolves vitamin C, so if juiced with any other vegetable or fruits it needs to be finished immediately.

Carrot contains vitamin A, which has anti-aging effect and also improves one’s eyesight. With its high dietary fibre content, it's great for detoxifying.

Bell Pepper contains as much vitamin C as lemon. With its vitamin A and C, it helps to maintain high metabolism and purify the body.

Tips on juice cleansing:

- Drinking your juices on an empty stomach makes it easier and faster for the vitamins and minerals to be absorbed by the body.

- In the morning, drink the juice after a cup of water helps absorption. During lunch or dinner time, drink it half an hour before the meal or 2 to 3 hours later having the meal.

- Drink it right away after juicing. Vitamin C and beta-carotene in vegetables gets destroyed easily after contact with air.

- Add flavour to your vegetable juices with fruits. Vegetable juices are usually not easy to drink because of its bitter taste. To make it more platable, mix it with apples, lemons or other fruits to add some taste. If it's still not sweet enough for you, add some honey or black sugar rather than white sugar.

To not falsify

I remember the first time I tried semi-permanent lash extension (years ago when it was still at its pioneering days). The immediate appearance of full luscious lashes made me whoop with joy inside. The days following it … having to “tread” very delicately around my eyes; not being able to rub or wash them properly made me wonder if this was all worth it. It even got me swearing at myself every time I look at the mirror when a couple of strands started to break off. I say it’s the price you pay for vanity.

I decided to move on to something less permanent – falsies. More hassle no doubt having to fix them on myself but much more “user friendly” because I could remove them the minute I reached the taxi! Above all, when I wore the more dramatic feathery ones at parties, no one dared bat an eye at me (well, I was in the dark most of the times after all).

With the surge of the lash trend, lash extensions, prescription and nonprescription lashes are batting their way into everyone’s makeup bags. This beauty obsession has led to a boom in beauty parlours offering eyelash services where the phrase “let us mink your wink” is often heard.

Recently, a friend who’s working in the medical field approached me about her concerns having seen many women come into the clinic seeking help for damaged or loss of eyelashes as a result of overuse of eyelash extensions. Like her, I feel a duty to let women know the cost of vanity.

The difficulty of eyelash extensions is that constant use of lash glue can irritate the skin while special removal creams for the removal of falsies can also cause skin irritation, wrinkling and foreign body entering the eyes and thus affecting vision. "The lash root is very delicate and lashes can easily break due to rough daily habits," says Dr Christopher Khng, Medical Director, of Eyewise Vision clinic. Remember that your lashes serve a purpose beyond beauty.

Tips to consider

1. Take it easy. Never tug at your lashes, and avoid rubbing your eyes harshly.

2. When using a lash curler, don't pull on your eyelids.

3. Do not use mascaras that are more than six months old. This helps to keep your mascara free of germs that can lead to infection. And remove your mascara before you go to sleep because any stiffness from the mascara can also break lashes.

4. Use gentle eye makeup remover or oil cleanser. Use gentle soft movements like patting or dabbing. A medical grade sterilid eyelid cleansing gel like SteriLid by Thera Tears is gentle yet effective for cleaning the lids.

5. Remove clumps while the mascara is still wet and easy to comb through.

Lastly, you may want to consider Latisse solution, an alternative to the natural growth of lashes. It has been used as a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis (lack of lashes) since 2009. Although side effects like irritation and darkening of the skin on the eyelid (which has been reported to be reversible after stopping the drug) as well as turning light eye colours brown cited, many including myself who have tried it did not suffer any of those side effects, only much healthier and fuller looking lashes.

Feeling The Love?

Are you in the mood for some lovin’ with Valentine’s Day around the corner? I’m a complete sucker for romantic movies and have been known to shout at the screen: “BUT YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO BE TOGETHER!!”
Anyway, nothing beats seeing your favourite on-screen couple kiss – because deep down inside we want it to be us in that moment. Here’s some of my favourite movie kisses, with tips on how to re-enact them (if you can).

Romeo and Juliet

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Oh, the days when Leo was young, blonde and beautiful. When he and Claire Danes locked lips in the elevator, teenage girls all over the world were slain.

Difficulty Level: Easy. There may not be a camera circling around you, but elevators are easy enough to find.

Spider-Man

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

I’m not a Tobey Maguire fan, but this scene is so iconic that it has to make the list. Plus everything looks more romantic when you’re standing in the rain.

Difficulty Level: Tough, but there are ways around it. Please don’t get your man to dangle upside down on the monkey bars (accidents are a sure-fire way to kill the mood) – be inventive with hanging over couches or the bed.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

What did I say about the rain being romantic? Once you add Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams into the mix, the result is a steamy movie kiss to remember.

Difficulty Level: Moderate. If you want to get in the mood I suppose either one of you will have to get all riled up. If you’re really going to stand in the rain, be sure not to catch a cold (another mood killer).

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

This scene already achieved a cult status, but it revived with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s re-enactment in Crazy Stupid Love. Just the phrase “no one puts baby in the corner” says it all.

Difficulty Level: Close to impossible – unless your man looks like either Patrick Swayze or Gosling. If you’re going to attempt it, make sure he’s done plenty of weight-lifting in preparation.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Okay, so they’re cartoon dogs, but there’s something so charming and innocent about this Disney kiss. The humble plate of spaghetti has never looked more romantic.

Difficulty Level: Messy. But if you’re used to slurping up your ramen, this should be a cinch.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Even though we know it ends in tragedy, Leo and Kate were the perfect couple (or so I thought, when I was eight). I can’t hear a Celine Dion song without seeing this scene in my head.

Difficulty Level: Depends on how committed you are to re-enacting it. If you can’t be bothered to find a boat (which is fair enough), a standing fan will suffice to recreate the sea breeze.

The Two-Minute Rule: The Secret To Getting More Stuff Done

I’m quite the productivity junkie. I’m always on the lookout for tricks to get more stuff done each day. For the next few months, I’ll be sharing some of the most useful productivity hacks I’ve come across, starting with my favourite: the two-minute rule.

The rule is simple enough: if something takes less than two minutes to do, do it right away.*

The thing is, most of the tasks you procrastinate on aren’t actually difficult to do and can be tackled in a couple of minutes. The Two–Minute Rule forces you to do these tasks immediately, rather than let them add on to your long, long list of tasks on your to-do list.

You’d be surprised just how many tasks can be completed within two minutes. Let’s say you plan to meet a friend for lunch at your fave café this weekend. Rather than pencil in “book a table for two for Sunday afternoon” in your to-do list, call the café immediately and make a reservation.

It might seem like a simple idea, but the two-minute rule can significantly up your productivity, as it’ll help you develop the habit of tackling quick and easy tasks right away. Over time, it adds up.

So what’s something you can do that’ll take less than two minutes?

Do it right away.

*The Two-Minute Rule was first mentioned by productivity guru David Allen in his book Getting Things Done.
