3 gradation lips looks as seen on Korean celebrities

$

If putting on a chilli red or a magenta lipstick is too much for you, try experimenting with gradation lips. The gradation lip trend have been seen on many Korean girl group members such as T-ara's Ham Eun Jung. Without further ado, we present you 3 gradation lips looks that you should try it out for yourself.

Red

Red is the colour that makes the most lasting impression as it makes the lips pop. When wearing a red colour on lips, the rest of your makeup should be nude. Putting red on full lips can be considered too much, but wearing it as gradation makeup can make lips look more perky and kissable.

Orange

Orange may be a difficult colour to pull off - especially for Asian skin tones. However, if worn as a gradation lip colour, it can look warm and summery (perfect with your summer dresses)!

Pink

Pink lips enhances girly looks and when worn as a gradation lip makeup, it makes the girl look even more sweet and delicate. Pastel pink goes well with cool skintones while hot pink will look great with warmer or darker skintones.

Which is your favourite look?

Games that drive me crazy: An ode to Flappy Bird

$

0

If you haven’t heard, Flappy Bird got taken down from the app store after its developer Nyugen Ha Dong said he “cannot take this anymore”. His tweets of frustration and subsequent pulling out of the game have caused /ME/ frustration. Simply because I can no longer egg my friends on to download Flappy Bird. It’s not that I’m great at it and want to challenge everyone (I only scored a paltry 19) – it’s just that I would like to spread my angst over to my friends. (Those who play it will understand)

The demise of Flappy Bird only means one thing –another mobile game will take over as app of the year. While waiting anxiously for another crazy game to take over my life, here’s what I think make mobile games so viral:

1. They’re gorgeous
Not gorgeous as in the state-of-the-art gorgeous. What do Angry Birds, Flappy Bird, Candy Crush, Tiny Tower, Plants Vs Zombies, etc have in common? They are cute as hell. I admit, it was very satisfying to bump off green pigs with the birds. And the plants in Plants vs Zombies – I want my sunflowers to look as cute in real life!

2. They’re simple
The instructions of Flappy Bird are easy to understand – get the darn bird through those green pipes. There usually is only one objective to these viral games – kill the zombies and pigs, build up your tower, and destroy all the candy. For some games, there are levels involved, and this brings me to my next point…

3. But they are actually so darned difficult
IT’S JUST GETTING THE BIRD THROUGH THE PIPES – HOW IS IT THAT I ONLY SCORE TWO POINTS. Games that go viral teeter between the thin line of simple yet challenging. They must be simple, but not so easy that you’ll get bored, difficult enough to keep you hooked, yet not so tough that you’ll give up. This is a charming (yet so irritating) point of all the games that we’ve seen go viral. It’s tough getting the angle right for Angry Birds, it’s challenging to think through the next steps of Candy Crush, and it’s so annoying to predict how high and low the Flappy bird will go when you tap on the screen.

4. It’s all about perceived luck
Games that count on skill rarely go viral – especially those brainy IQ ones that need you to solve puzzles. No one wants to rack their brains after a tough day of work and school. Popular games are all about mindless scoring and moving and killing. Take Tiny Tower, it’s about collecting money, building up and making sure that your tower is functioning. The only thing you’ll have to carefully think about is what your first shop will be on your newly minted 56th floor.

5. You should be able to challenge your friends
Before Flappy Bird got taken off the app store, I told Alicia, our editor, about the game. She didn’t seem too interested, but all it took was one game for her to download it on the phone. Over the weekend, we kept taunting each other over our high scores (I still beat her :P). And that’s the pleasure of the games – it’s a social tool to keep us talking and engaged. And it’s the word of mouth that keeps the games going.

Top Korean actresses share their beauty tips for flawless skin

Want to achieve the flawless complexion that top Korean actresses Lee Young Ae, Gianna Jun and Kim Ha Neul have been spotted with? Perhaps you should take a cue from their skincare routine.

Lee Young Ae: Small amount of good stuff!

Lee Young Ae recently appeared on SBS "Good Morning" and revealed her skincare secret. She said, “Too much skincare products can do more harm than good. I use camellia oil and a moisturizing cream only. I don’t even use an eye cream.”
Camellia oil is not only great for moisturizing and relaxing skin, it also strengthens nails and hair well.

Gianna Jun: Focus on moisturising

From her dress to lipstick, everything about Gianna Jun is a hot issue these days as she plays the main character Chan Song Yi in drama series "My Love from the Star." Just as her character who carried a facial mist and soothing balm everywhere she goes, Gianna too enjoys using a hydrating essence mist.
To keep skin glowing and moist while filming, she mists her face regularly in addition to basic skin care steps. She also applies sunscreen and chooses a BB cream that can accentuate the natural glow of her skin as much as possible.

Kim Ha Neul: Complete with Glow

Kim Ha Neul has her unique skincare tips and emphasises the importance of cleansing and moisturising. One up and coming beauty product that Kim Ha Neul recommends is a finisher. Finisher protects skin from drying out by creating a thin oil film on your face. Apply the finisher after fully moisturising your skin with essence and moisturising cream. Finisher improves the level of brightness, glow, moisture, and clearness. It keeps skin glowing and moist all day long.

Nail these girl group members' look with 3 easy steps

According to Korean beauty trends, light, natural makeup catches the attention of guys more than fancy smoky makeup. Here's three makeup tips to achieve the looks of two female idol stars who have been treated like a goddess among men in Korea (and probably even globally): Min Ah of Girl’s Day and Son Na Eun of A-Pink.

The core of Min Ah and Na Eun’s feminine makeup is to emphasise their facial features naturally. They moisturise their skin to create a natural glow, which shines on their face as though they are using a highlighter product. They also make their eyes look deeper and glamorous with light golden brown eyeshadow and only draw a thin line of black eyeliner for definition. The two stars complete their feminine makeup look by giving a hint of pink to their lips.

Natural, glowy skin

The first step of feminine makeup is to make skin look as clear and glowy as possible. Choose a rich makeup foundation to create a glowing skin. If you have super dry skin, then mix your foundation with a small amount of moisturizer to cover any problems and even out your skin tones.

Feminine gold smokey eye makeup

Gold shades often give luxurious, fancy feel so it is often used for party makeup; however, Min Ah and Na Eun use only a small amount of light gold eyeshadow to create an innocent-looking feminine makeup. Lightly color your eyelids and the area beneath your eyes. Make your eye shape clearer with a thin line of black eyeliner.

Romantic pink lips

Pink is the best color to emphasize one’s lovely charm. Matte pink lipstick creates a chic, urban look while glossy pink completes a more feminine, lovely look. Fill your lips with it or create a gradient effect for more natural, trendy look.

Top 4 shoe trends to try out

Q. I’ve just scored my first job working in an Ad Agency, I’ve got loads of clothes options but what type of shoes should I wear to work?

A. First of all congrats on your new position, way to go! The good news is that working in the creative industry means that the dress code is a bit more relaxed, and it’s encouraged to show you’ve got flair, so be experimental in your shoe-choices and try out these top trends…

1. Opt for a pair of bright eye-catching pumps and have fun experimenting with solids and prints. Keep them office-appropriate by opting for a heel that hits below 4 inches.

2. Try a pair of heeled penny loafers for the sexy secretary look, or try a pair of smart smoking slippers if you are wearing pants.

3. Work it in a pair of cut-out ‘shooties’ they look amazing with a midi A-line skirt.

4. Be a vamp in uber-pointy stilettos, the key to nailing this look is to wear them with structured clothes. Pssst… asymmetrical skirts also look awesome with this type of shoe.

Designers and their furry companions

It seems like almost every big name designer has a canine friend – and mind you, those friend or friends are living the life! Making guest appearances in editorials (Valentino's), constantly dolled up in gazillion dollars worth of accessories, such as Donatella's, and and and, not forgetting, becoming an overnight superstar because of social media (*coughs* Karl's *coughs*).

I shall leave you to feast your eyes on some major cute pictures!

P.S I've always wanted a dog. But my mom made me choose. So I got rats instead and it pissed her off even more. She just simply dislikes furry animals; it’s so sad.
Disclaimer: My pet rats are darn cute. Really!

Oscars 2014 Red Carpet

It's the Oscars! And as of right now, all thoughts of statuettes have flown out the window because... Red carpet!  Fashion! Gowns! Lupita! We can barely contain ourselves. Here are our thoughts on the best and worst of the day:

1. Lupita Nyong'o

image:Kevork Djansezian/Stringer/Getty

Forget easing into it, we're just going to jump in headfirst into the all of the gorgeousness that is Lupita in this ice-blue Prada gown. Lupita has consistently served up some glorious, monochromatic fashion statements throughout the awards season, so much so that after a while we kind of started going mehhhh... she looks perfect, and now we kind of expect it, so really it's rather boring. NOT TONIGHT, PEOPLE. NOT TONIGHT. If you were getting even the teensiest bit sick of Ms. Nyong'o (call it the Anne-Hathaway effect), prepare to fall in love all over again with her in this rather simple, yet princessy and magnificent confection of a gown. As Randy Jackson would say, LUPITA IS IN IT TO WIN IT. And if she doesn't nab a statuette tonight, it would be a crying shame.

2. Jennifer Lawrence

image: Jeff Vespa/Getty

So let's forget about the fact that she fell down again. And just stick to what's important. Oh man, oh man... Jennifer, we really love you. Like really, really love. And we also loved your short hair, which you rocked in so many ways on different red carpets, like here and here and here. But it just feels like there's nothing we can do right now but cry, WHAT HAPPENED??? The Dior gown and the jewels and everything is okay, but the HAIR. Nooo... What is it? Is Harvey Weinstein casting a Hillary Clinton biopic that you're really really desperate to get into? Like, seriously? Did your agent then tell you it would be a good idea to audition on the red carpet "because then the public can see what we want them to see - you as the perfect Hillary Clinton!!" NO, JENNIFER. NOT A GOOD IDEA. We kinda even want to compare you to Lion-O from the Thundercats... like this is happening to us right now. And we want it to stop.

:(((((

3. Jennifer Garner

source: Jason Merritt/Getty

Onto another Jennifer. YAY! From the waist up, Jennifer looks kinda like eehhh, not trying very hard. But add that swishy column of shimmery fringe and ooh la la! We can't help but love. This reminds us of the time when Jennifer Garner wasn't just producer/director Ben Affleck's plus one on the red carpet. It's a time we missed, so we're very glad it's back. These days, Jennifer just seems to rock up to these award shows with the right amount of: Mmm, yeah, okay, it's the Oscars, but imma just do me. The undone hair, with the bangs sweeping over her eyes - it's just so very fresh, young and fun. She looks like she's going to have a good time, and we love that. Plus, those platform heels are killeeeeeerrrr...

4. Lady Gaga

image: Jeff Kravitz/Getty

We must have missed a memo because we don't really know what Gaga is doing at the Oscars. And didn't she like ban herself from red carpets or something? There must be a special exception for red carpets with giant Oscars on them because Gaga spent a lot of time posing next to this one. Gaga is wearing Versace, naturally, and we adore this blush pink-lavender hue on her. Like it just suits her colouring so perfectly, and she looks seriously ethereal. A lot of stars did shimmer and a lot of stars did nudes at this year's red carpet, it seems, and right now Gaga is just topping this list. Brava, Gaga, brava!

5. Angelina Jolie

image: Kevin Mazur/Getty

Every time Angelina Jolie turns to face the camera, all we see is boobs. Is that a good thing, or a bad thing? We feel like most times it's a bad thing but maybe she's making a statement about how she loves her body, even after a cancer-fighting double mastectomy. So okay, more power to you, Angelina.

6. Elsa Pataky and Chris Hemsworth

image: George Pimentel/Getty

This woman is carrying Chris Hemsworth's child. And by virtue of that fact alone we are fated to hate everything she puts on her body. Okay, that's a really mean thing to say. But even if we were to be objective and judge lovely Elsa solely on this look, it would kind of be like uhmmm... we really do hate to talk smack about pregnant people on the red carpet (but you kinda look like you stole the drapes out of some over-the-top Bollywood harem, wrapped it around your nude body and decided to walk out like that). Yikes. For maternity red carpet, dear Elsa, we point you to one Kerry Washington. And a sidenote? We are loving the burgundy on Chris. Subtle. But dramatic.

7. Naomi Watts

image: Steve Granitz/Getty

For some reason (the hair, maybe, with the shape and colour of the gown), this seems like a less powerful version of Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford at 2012's ceremony. That being said, there's something about the jewellery, with the hair and makeup that's really working for Naomi. We love the strong brow, with the raspberry red lip and the casual-yet-glamorous vibe of her upswept bangs. We're calling this hair trend.

8. Pharrell Williams and Helen Lasichanh

image: Ethan Miller/Getty

Yeah, noo.... Remember how we said that Jennifer Garner was the right amount of "Imma do me"? Well, Pharrell is the wrong amount. Dear Pharrell, we would have totally approved if you'd even rocked your ten-gallon hat on the red carpet - that could have been really cute. This is just out of place, and therefore, kind of sad... because we want to take you seriously but we don't know how to with all that hairless leg on display.

And just to wash the taste of that off our fashion palates, here is one more Lupita for the road...

...sigh!

Academy Awards Fever: Best Costume Design

$

In a "blink and you'll miss it" moment, Catherine Martin picked up a statuette for Best Costume Design yesterday at the Oscars. Indeed, in all the hubbub and drama of "Who won Best Picture?"  and "Which actress had the most graceful 'I just lost' face?", Best Costume Design is an award category that frequently gets overlooked. To honour the great work of some of fashion's best fantasists, we take a look back at some of the seminal winners and nominees of what remains one of our favourite categories.

1. Edith Head

(source)

You can't talk about fashion in film without mentioning the great Edith Head. With a spectacular 35 nominations and 8 wins, the American leads the Oscars pack, despite entering the ranks of the studio system as a costume sketch artist with virtually no prior training. And sure, maybe some (or most) of the credit on films like Sabrina, for which Head claimed an Oscar in 1954, went to collaborators such as Hubert de Givenchy, but even so, Head's genius cannot be denied. Her first win was for The Heiress in 1949, but if you ask us, it's her star-making work on Roman Holiday (1953) that really stands out. Also of note: Head's collaborations with Hitchcockian heroines Grace Kelly and Kim Novak.

2. Orry-Kelly

(source)

Born in Kiama, Australia as Orry George Kelly, Orry-Kelly moved to New York to pursue an acting career. While his first roomie, Cary Grant, would obviously go on to be a big-screen star, Kelly's path lead him down the road of costuming instead. He's been nominated four times and won three times for the films An American In Paris, Les Girls (1957) and Some Like it Hot (1959).

3. Cecil Beaton

(source)

Sir Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton is perhaps best known as a photographer, but he was basically a polymath who could do a number of things including paint and win Academy Awards for Costume Design. Born in Hampstead, England, he left Cambridge without a degree in 1925, proving that a degree doesn't matter when you can do other things like join the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame or even be knighted with a CBE. Beaton won Oscars twice for his work on Gigi (1958) and My Fair Lady (1964).

4. Eiko Ishioka

(source)

Eiko Ishioka started her career in advertising, producing acclaimed campaigns for Japanese brands such as Shiseido and Parco. Eventually she started working on films like Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) and Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now (1979), a collaboration that resulted in her only Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Coppola's 1992 horror fantasy epic, Bram Stoker's Dracula. Ishioka's most frequent film collaborator would be Tarsem Singh - she made costumes for four of him films, The Cell (2000), The Fall (2006), The Immortals (2011) and Mirror Mirror (2012).

5. Colleen Atwood

(source)

Nine-time nominee Colleen Atwood is undoubtedly responsible for some of the most memorable fashion moments in modern cinematic history. A frequent collaborator of director Tim Burton, it was her fantastical work on Edward Scissorhands (1990) that changed the trajectory of her career. She continued to work with Burton on films like Sleepy Hollow (1999), Sweeney Todd (2007) and Alice in Wonderland (2010) but also contributed to films including Big Fish (2003), Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), Nine (2009) and Alice in Wonderland (2010).

14. ... she also has her insecure moments. The song "Ugly" was inspired partly by CL's feelings towards her haters.

"Koreans are more strict and people from around the world think that being different is wrong.
I don’t understand, you’re unique. I love being myself and love people that are themselves and just,
you know, “I’m doing me” type of people.
I have respect for those people and love for those people but some people don’t understand that.
So for me, I’m seen in public so I’m attacked a lot. I was feeling down one day and talking to him.
I was like, 'You know, maybe I am ugly to those people.' So we talked on and on and he wrote that song."

5 Runway Shows We Love

$
0

When it comes to fashion shows, it seems like the bigger, the better. These five shows pulled out all the stops to make an impression, and even years later they’ve left a lasting impression. Standard catwalks? They’re now old hat.

1. Chanel Fall/Winter 2014

(
source)

You would never associate Chanel with anything as everyday as shopping in the supermarket – so when Karl Lagerfeld transformed the runway into a massive Chanel grocery store, it was all anyone on social media could talk about. Every product had been given the Chanel treatment, even black cotton buds. If only we could strut the aisles as confidently as Miss Delevingne.

2. Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2013

(
source)

Seeing double? Pairs of models in symmetrical (well, sort of) outfits glided down escalators before strutting their stuff on the runway. Even the escalator itself was in theme with yellow and white stripes. Marc himself made his entrance bounding down the escalator at the finale. Is there anything the man can’t do?

3. Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2012

(source)

As if the collection wasn’t beautiful enough (think pastel shades, headbands, and frothy skirts), when the models emerged perched on a spinning white carousel strung with lights you could see the fashion crowd swooning with delight. It was cotton-candy girlishness personified.

4. Fendi Great Wall Of China Fashion Show 2007

(source)

Staging a runway show on one of the wonders of the world? It sounds impossible, but incredibly, Fendi pulled it off on the Great Wall of China with the setting sun as a backdrop. Major props to the models for succeeding in walking downhill in dangerously high heels!

5. Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 1999

(source)

It takes a very special show to make fashion legend Alexander McQueen cry, and this was the only show which brought tears to his eyes. The moment when model Shalom Harlow stood on a rotating circle while being spray painted has gone down in history as one of fashion’s greatest iconic moments.

Quirky Comedies for Wes Anderson fans

Wes Anderson's latest, The Grand Budapest Hotel opens 20 March. We can't wait! In the meantime, check out more films to tickle your not-quite-mainstream funny bone.

1. Frank

We shamelessly admit, we'd pretty much watch anything starring Michael Fassbender. Even if he spends most of his screen time sporting a giant papier mache head. Such is Frank, the darkly comic indie film based on the true story of Chris Sievey a.k.a Frank Sidebottom, the cult 80s musician/comic artist. Co-starring Domhnall Gleeson (a.k.a. Bill Weasley), Maggie Gyllenhaal, we'd be disappointed if this didn't come to Singapore cinemas.

2. The Final Member

"The world's only penis museum needs one last endowment." Also a true story, surprisingly enough, is this one, which centres on the world's only penis museum in Husavik, Iceland. The Final Member chronicles one man's struggles to complete the collection of a lifetime, and two others' race to "endow" the museum with its crown jewels, as it were. Variety called the documentary "side-splittingly funny," finding "hilarity in humanity". And though its subject matter might first make some squeamish, the trailer itself had us in stitches AND disbelief. For a documentary, that's gold.

3. A Cock and Bull Story

Here's one you can watch right now - this critically-acclaimed, popularly-missed 2005 film showcased Steve Coogan's comic genius. Watch out for the scene-stealing Rob Brydon. Though the movie gets even funnier if you've read the book it's based on, Tristram Shandy, the film itself will deliver laughs, if irreverent, meta-, British humour is your thing.

4. Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me

Another documentary we can't wait to get our hands on: Chiemi Karasawa's profile of Elaine Stritch, Broadway legend and all-around inspiration. Poignant, funny, arch - we'd watch it just for the scene where Stritch surprises John Turturro with her recollection of her first stage orgasm. Fun people never get old.

Art We Adore: Chinatown Vinyl Squad

Once in awhile, we stumble across utterly inspired art. It's easy to spot: they tend to successfully marry mainstream and unconventional elements in a final product that's a tad offbeat, mostly culturally refreshing, and always stays in our mind long after we've seen it.

Which are exactly our feelings towards Kult's exhibition entitled "Chinatown Vinyl Squad'. By drawing, painting, silkscreening and collaging directly onto vintage Chinese vinyl record covers, the artists have transformed old and obscure into modern and cool.

We reckon the eye-catching covers reflect a level of artistry that is what differentiates between the pedestrian and the prodigious.

See for yourself:

If you'd like to see these works of art in real life, you can RSVP to their kitschy exhibition here.
Where: 8 Ann Siang Hill
When: March 29 to April 29
Opening hours: 12pm to 1am (Mondays to Saturdays)

5 ways to fall in love with your life

People who love spread their infectious joy around.

1. Embrace your flaws
We can't be perfect, and it's totally fine. Why would we want to be, anyway? Our flaws are what make us interesting, set us apart from others, and give us character. Besides, there's truth to this saying: once you accept your flaws, no one can use them against you. Nonetheless, we're a stubborn bunch -- if you still demand perfection (or should we say PEARfection?), may we recommend the cooling Somersby's Pear Cider?

2. Constantly seek out new perspectives
Even the mind requires spring cleaning. Surround yourself with people who feed you with refreshing takes on old issues, especially if you don't agree with their stance. Being able to listen and understand an alternative perspective, without the need to 'correct' it, speaks volumes about one's maturity and wisdom.

3. Take care of your physical, mental and emotional health
In other words, love yourself. Wholeheartedly, unconditionally, fearlessly. And never let anyone tell you how to do it.

4. Take risks
There's only so much excitement a comfort zone can provide. If there's something that scares you, then perhaps that's even more reason to try. If all else fails, a swig of Somersby's Pear Cider should calm those nerves.

5. Relax
Whether it's five minutes in between tasks, or an hour's walk in the park, taking time off work does wonders to your wellbeing. Refresh yourself with a bottle of Somersby's for an extra shot of motivation.
